Graduating K21-KAB
This section applies to students enrolled in the degree programmes KAB (students who matriculated in AY 2025/26) and K21 (students who matriculated in AY 2023/24 or AY 2024/25).
For the final exam of the Bachelor's degree in Language Mediation and Intercultural Communication, students have to write a paper that:
- must not exceed 4,500 words
- can be theoretical and/or empirical
- can be related to the internship
- can be drafted in one of the foreign languages studied (except for students enrolled in the D curriculum, who must write it in Italian)
- must fall under one of the types approved by the Academic Board and described in the attached file.
The final exam is worth 3 credits.
As a general rule, the final paper should be linked to one of the 6-credit courses included in the study plan. Student may choose either the course lead instructor or the professor with whom they have attended the exam as supervisor for the final paper.
Students can request to be assigned a supervisor and submit the provisional title of their paper for approval only after earning at least 135 credits. The supervisor request form must be submitted by the applicable deadline, following the instructions attached below.
Once the supervisor has approved the final draft, students must submit the paper by the applicable deadline via Unimia > Online services (SIFA) > Student administrative services > Degree programme final exam > Thesis uploading.
The final paper is then evaluated by a commission composed of the supervisor and at least another professor of the degree programme. At least one member of the commission must be a full professor teaching within the degree programme. No public defence is required.
For the final paper, students can receive between 0 and 3 points, which are added to the weighted average of their exam grades.
Students who complete the programme within its normal duration are assigned 1 extra point. The supervisor may propose that the student be awarded honours if: the final score equals 110; the final paper meets all formal and methodological requirements; the student has passed at least one of its course exams with honours (30 e lode).
Students formally graduate during a public graduation ceremony that is organised and scheduled by the Academic Board of the degree programme.
The supervisor will only be assigned by a designated Committee.
Students must send the supervisor request form to the following address: elaboratifinali.med@unimi.it
The form must be submitted by the deadlines indicated in the file, which vary according to the session.
Students must indicate their preferences for the type of thesis, topic and supervisor in the appropriate sections of the form.
Once they receive an email reply, students must contact the supervisor assigned by the Committee.
Each student is required to complete the course 'Verso l'elaborato finale' ('Preparing your Thesis') for students in the Language Mediation and Intercultural Communication Bachelor's degree programme – MED, available on Moodle. The course covers key topics related to the preparation of the thesis, such as bibliographic research, drafting, and editorial guidelines. The course may also be accessed through the Ariel portal.
At the end of the course, students will be provided with a certificate to be handed in to their supervisor.
Students must include a signed statement of originality in the final draft of their thesis. In this statement students confirm their commitment to intellectual honesty in drafting the thesis and acknowledge their awareness of the consequences of plagiarism or improper use of sources. Students are therefore urged to read this statement as soon as possible, as its contents pertain to the entire process of drafting the thesis. In the most serious cases, plagiarism may preclude graduation. If a student is caught plagiarising and is subsequently rejected by their supervisor, they will have to request a new one by submitting the appropriate form to the Thesis Board. Inclusion of the dated, signed statement in the final draft of the work is mandatory. For questions or further information, students should contact their supervisor.
Summary
